How do I measure my wall and my art?
The wall. Measure the open run of wall you want to use, and floor to ceiling. A tape measure is best. Most ceilings are 96in (8ft); measure to the underside of any crown molding. Then drag the four dots on your photo to where that space meets the floor and ceiling.
With the camera. On iPhone, tap Measure your wall and point the camera at it. On an iPhone with LiDAR you tap the corners. The photo comes back with the outline drawn in; adjust the corners if it slipped. A tape measure is still the surest check.
The art. Measure the outside of the frame. Type the width, and Hangsmith suggests the height from the straightened photo. Measure the height too, to be sure.
Type sizes however you think of them: 144, 12', 12' 6", 365cm or 3.65m all work.
What do "Preview" and "To scale" mean?
Preview is the layout drawn in perspective on the photo of your own wall. It is for judging the look. How closely it matches the room depends on where the corners were placed and on the photo, so treat it as a close picture, not a measurement. It says Preview, measured when the wall was measured with the camera.
To scale is the flat plan, drawn from the sizes you typed. Switch to it with Plan. It is what you hang from, and the hanging guide's measurements come from it.
Why is nothing uploaded?
Because nothing needs to be. The layouts are worked out on your phone, so your photos, sizes and saved layouts stay there, inside the app. There are no accounts, no analytics and no tracking, and the app makes no network requests of its own. Deleting the app deletes everything in it.
A layout leaves your phone only when you share it yourself, through the iOS share sheet. The privacy policy has the details.
Why does it ask for the camera, and what if I said no?
Hangsmith uses the camera to photograph your art and your wall, and to measure a wall on iPhone. It asks only after you tap a button that needs it.
If you said no and want to use the camera, open the iPhone Settings app, then Hangsmith, and turn on Camera.
You can also do without it: choose photos you already have with Choose a photo, or tap No photo? Type the size and work from the to-scale plan alone.
